How to choose the right color for your new windows
When it comes to getting new windows, one of the questions you’ll be asked is, “What color would you like?” While most people will choose white replacement windows, you may notice that windows in different colors have started to appear in your neighborhood. Window color trends have changed in the last few years.
Changing the color of the windows can drastically alter the appearance of your home, in a good way. This is why an increasing number of homeowners are choosing to set themselves apart with color combinations that reflect their unique style.
If you live within a HOA community, you’ll most likely be limited to the approved color. But if you aren’t limited, you should review a few critical factors. Are you getting windows for an existing color palette or are you planning to change it? New siding, paint, or a roof in different color, may be the time to introduce complimentary colored windows. If you are considering getting colored windows, you’ll want to evaluate both the existing (or planned) color palette and your home’s architectural style.
Begin taking note of the homes and windows in your area. Look for homes with colored windows; try to find one that matches your home’s color palette and architectural style.
Color Palette
Does your home have predominantly warm earth tones, or is it primary color or hue? For example, if your house has a brown roof or has elements of brick or stone in warmer shades, consider windows that are also in those tones.
That’s not to say that a bold, bright color won’t look great; a pop of an unexpected color can really set your home apart from the neighbors.
You’ll want to decide if you want the the windows to blend in or contrast with the surrounding color. If your home has windows in varied sizes and shapes, a coordinated color will look better than something that calls attention to them.
Contrasting colors tend to draw the eye towards that feature.
Architectural Style
- Modern or contemporary homes emphasize the lines of the home. Strong, linear lines and minimal embellishments are hallmarks of these homes. By using windows in black, dark gray, or bronze you can accentuate this architectural style. These stark, saturated window colors add a sense of drama and portray a luxurious appearance.
- Traditional or Colonial homes are often seen with crisp, white windows. Because these homes typically have symmetrical windows layouts, the white windows enhance the formal look and feel.
- Rustic or Craftsman style homes are almost always done in earth tones. This is because these homes are meant to blend, or coexist, with the surrounding landscape. While it may seem logical to have windows in a beige or brown, deep reds and shades of gold also fall into the earth tone category.
