What you need to know to make an informed decision.
Everyone knows that it’s possible to save money on home improvement projects if you do it yourself. While a lot of people will stain a deck or build a garden wall, a few homeowners will choose to install new vinyl replacement windows themselves.
Since custom sized vinyl replacement windows are made to fit into the existing rough opening, you won’t necessarily need highly advanced carpentry skills or specialty tools for an installation. With this in mind, knowing where a problem may be hiding before you commit, can potentially save you time, money, and aggravation.
Research What You’ll Need
- TOOLS SUPPLIES & TIME: Jantek’s installation instructions includes a list of the tools and supplies needed. You will need items that most homeowners won’t have at hand, such as a sheet metal brake for capping the exterior. When you read the instructions, also note the time that you’ll need to invest in the project. While seasoned pros can typically knock out an entire house in a day, it will most likely take a DIY’er considerably longer.
- TRANSPORTATION: Make arrangements for transporting both the old and new windows. Jantek offers an optional delivery service to local areas. Ask your representative if delivery is available in your area.
- DISPOSAL: Old windows are considered construction debris. Check with your township or county on regulations and potential fees regarding disposal.
- PERMITS: Because custom sized vinyl replacement windows are designed to fit into the existing rough opening, you may not need a permit. This does NOT apply if you are altering the dimensions or making structural changes. Read your township’s regulations so you know what steps to take should you find that a permit is needed.
Evaluate Your Current Situation
You’ll need to evaluate the structural integrity of your window rough openings, internal and external sills, and trims, before you begin. Wooden windows, and their surrounding opening structures and trims, are susceptible warping, termite infatuation, and rot. For instance, if you’re replacing your windows because of water leakage, chances are you have one or more of these going on.
Unless you have the skills needed to correct this properly, you’ll need to call in a carpenter or order windows with installation included. Jantek’s offers installation service with the purchase of their windows and patio doors, which includes mild to moderate damage repair for an additional remediation fee.
Some of the Signs of Window Rot Include:
- Peeling or bubbly paint
- Soft wood
- Mold
- Drafty windows
- Difficult operation
- Sashes that rattle
It should be noted that not all frame rot can be identified before you remove the old windows. Be prepared to come up with a temporary solution until it can be properly corrected.
Watch Replacement Windows Being Installed
There’s nothing like seeing it with your own eyes to know what’s entailed, and if it’s a project you have the time and/or skills to complete.
Be realistic. If you know of a friend or family member who is getting windows installed, make it a point to spend some time watching. Keep in mind that a professional window installer has years of experience under his belt and will make it look easier than you may find it.
Start With One or Two Windows
We recommend that you start with one or two windows (On a side of the house that is not visible). This way, if you decide that it’s more than you anticipated, you can order the remainder with installation included.
Additionally, it’s best to begin with a room or space that can withstand any problems until you can remedy it. Having a leaky or drafty window in the kitchen or mudroom, for a short time, will probably be easier to tolerate than a living room or bedroom.
Research What You’re Buying
Big box home improvement stores offer off-the-shelf sizes and custom ordering options. Low prices can be deceiving when it comes to energy performance. The number of panes, types of glass, material and manufacturing methods used, all affect how well the windows perform.
Jantek Windows and Doors can manufacture most custom replacement windows in as little as two weeks. Our EnergyMiser product line has been rated by an independent lab and is constructed using only the best materials.
