What you should know before you decide.
After you get some quotes, you may find yourself having to decide whether you should replace all of the windows at once (whole house) or limit it to some (partial house) in order to spread the cost out over a period of time. Ultimately, only you can decide what works for you and your budget, but you should know the advantages and disadvantages of the options.
WHOLE-HOUSE or PARTIAL WINDOW REPLACEMENT
Volume Discount: Most manufacturers offer a discount when you purchase a higher number of windows.- Installation: Depending on who will be installing the new windows, most window companies have a minimum number of windows that they will install without incurring a surcharge.
-
Price Increases: If you wait to replace the rest of your windows for an extended period of time, you may find that the cost has risen.
-
Consistent Window Design: This is the one that is often overlooked when people decide to replace only some of their windows. Window manufacturers are no obligation to make the exact same style window indefinitely.
- Manufacturers will often change the design if there are advances in window technology.
- They’re limited by their material sources and have to modify the design if their material supplier changes their output.
-
While some changes are undetectable to the untrained eye, others could be more obvious, especially if they are near a window with previous design.
REPLACE YOUR WINDOWS IN PHASES
- Problematic Windows:
- Inoperable windows could be a safety issue.
- Windows that leak will cause damage to your home.
- Energy Inefficient Windows: Old single pane, aluminum or wooden windows can’t compare today’s windows when it comes to saving energy. Multiple panes, argon gas, fusion welding, and filled sashes are just a few features that newer windows have.
- Window Styles: If your home has more than one type of window, (e.g. Double Hung, Slider, Casement) group them together. This way, even if the manufacture alters a window design, your windows will have a consistent look within that type of window.
- Front Facing Windows: Replace the windows that affect curb appeal first.
- If the window design has changed when you decide to replace the back windows, they won’t be seen at the same time. This makes it much harder to spot discrepancies.
